Book Reports

Our book reports and presentations on the National Book Award winners and nominees have been wonderful! I am impressed by how well students have interacted with their books and presented the book through their creative projects. The well-written book talks have us even more excited about reading!

Avery’s t-shirt project on the book The Real Boy showed a map of the main character’s world and journey through Western Alethia, the setting of her novel.

Aven’s cereal box project depicted many items important to the main character in The Great Gilly Hopkins. Items included a paper airplane, an Oxford book of English verse, money, chewing gum, Gilly’s bed, a doll, and Gilly’s teacher.

Lucas presented his canvas painting of the house and items symbolizing the mystery surrounding The Greenglass House.

Addy presented a game board for The Invention of Hugo Caberet.

Whit and his 3D swan, Louis, shared a wonderfully written interview to help us learn more about Louis’ perspective of the events in The Trumpet of the Swan.

Brooklyn’s mobile told us about the characters, setting, and objects represented in Orphan Island, such as the boat that represents the boat that mysteriously appears in the mist every year, leaving one new child and taking away the oldest.

Ben’s cereal box project included several items such as the farmhouse and cinder block where the rats lived in Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.

Aston’s game board for The Westing Game challenges players to solve riddles to move through the game, just like the book’s characters did. Students enjoyed playing the game during indoor recess.

Alyssa’s map for the book, Holes, helped tell us the story of the main character, Stanley, during his time at Camp Green Lake.

Madi’s board game for the book, Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key included elements from Joey’s school and home life of a boy with ADHD.

Violet’s mobile for the magical and complex novel A Tangle of Knots included items that were important to Cady, the main character, an orphan with a talent for baking cakes.
