Paper Chair Engineering Challenge and European Exploration

(Students diligently working on fall story peer edits.)

Fifth graders have done an excellent job using their creative sides this week. They have continued to work hard on their “Fall: Roll a Story” writing pieces. After completing their drafts, peer editing two of their classmates’ stories, and talking through additional edits with me, they are prepared to begin writing the final copies.

Students also began a creative writing activity in a new platform called Boomwriter. After reading chapter one of a spooky story titled, “The House on the Corner”, students were challenged to brainstorm additional plot ideas and write chapter two. This has been an exciting project that we will continue to work on throughout next week.

Last week, students participated in a STEM activity called, “Paper Chair Challenge.” This was an engineering activity where students were asked to build a chair that could support the weight of a stuffed animal using only paper and tape. After they successfully built paper chairs, I challenged them to build another to support an even heavier stuffed animal. The whole class came up with really impressive and creative ideas to complete the activity. After they finished building and testing their paper chairs, we reflected on what went well and what we could incorporate to improve next time.

Today in social studies, we are beginning a new project studying European explorers. Students will collaborate on Google Slides to research notable early explorers including: name, birth, death, country of origin, family, sponsor, exploration years, areas explored, reasons for exploration, accomplishments, and interesting facts.
