Week of 10/7- 10/11

This week is a short one with Fall Break just around the corner!  But it’s a full one.  Here’s the plan:

Writing: Students are publishing their opinion essays.  We have discussed expectations for formatting word-processed documents and learned some features of GoogleDocs to help with the formatting process.

Reading; We will continue reading Alice in Wonderland and a few other short stories this week.  As we read, we will talk about the difference between observations and inferences.  Inferences are thoughts about the text that are not directly stated, but can be gleaned based on textual evidence.

Spelling/Grammar: We will begin a spelling unit this week, it will span next week as well, and the spelling check will be next Friday.

Science: Students are learning about weathering and erosion this week.  These processes are very observable ways that the Earth changes (unlike moving tectonic plates), and will inform observations that we make on our field trip coming up.

Social Studies: Students are continuing their research.

Math: We are starting to dive into fractions this week.  We will be discussing the relationship between mixed numbers, improper fractions, and proper fractions.  We will also learn how to add fractions with like and unlike denominators.
