Week of 10/28 – 11/1

Welcome November!  Feel that fall weather coming?!  Here’s what we’re doing in the classroom:

Reading: We’re getting into Fatty Legs.  We’re discussing Olemaun’s character and culture as we learn more about her in the first few chapters.

Spelling/Grammar: We’re into the second week of our deep dive into verbs.  This week, we’re focused on the progressive and perfect tenses.

Science: On Wednesday, students will be putting their knowledge about earthquakes (and strategies people use to reduce earthquake damage to buildings) to use!  Students will have the opportunity to design structures that we will put to a test on our state=of-the-art shake table (a tray of Jello!). With the scientific process in mind, the students will have the opportunity to redesign and test a new structure before reflecting on which strategies work best.

Social Studies: Fifth graders are working on their slideshow for their presentation on Native American cultures. We will also go over proper bibliography formatting this week.

Math: After reviewing the assessment on adding and subtracting fractions, we will move on to our next unit: multiplying fractions.
