We had an exciting start to the year in Early Learners Spanish. We learned our routines and procedures for Spanish and also started practicing our words of the week: hola, and adiós. Each day at the start of Spanish time we sing a song to each other to practice saying hola. All of the Early Learners have done a great job catching on to the words of the song and singing along. We’ve also played some games that help us practice saying hola and also practice recognizing our names.
Every Friday we will explore one of the three Spanish-speaking countries we are focusing on this year. This week, being the first Friday of our first full week of school, we talked about the word “culture” and what it means. Early Learners discussed how culture could mean the type of art or music that comes from a certain place, or it could also be food, or games or toys, or even what types of celebrations and traditions we have. We read a story together that taught us that while people do have many differences and come from different places, we also have many similarities too!
Early Learners helped to identify these similarities:
- We all have someone who love us
- We are all growing
- We all have favorite things
To end our week, we played a traditional children’s game from Mexico called la víbora (the viper), which involves the students lining up conga-line style (to create the “snake”) and then slithering under a bridge made by two other students in the class. When the music stops, the bridge falls down, stopping the snake! This was such a fun way to get students involved and see a piece of another country’s culture come to life in their own classroom. They had so much fun playing and I look forward to learning and growing with them throughout our school year!
