Students in world history wrapped up their unit on Africa from 1000 to 1500 CE. We engaged with a few primary sources from the traveler and writer Ibn Battuta as well as a source written from Afonso I of Kongo to the King of Portugal. Students are demonstrating strong skills in interpreting the important details of primary sources.
From here, we have moved into our study of Europe, beginning with a brief overview of the fall of Rome, the “dark ages”, and the influence of the Catholic Church and Holy Roman Empire during this time. We read a source that captured Pope Urban II’s speech calling for the Crusades, and we’ll work to understand those historical moments in more detail next week. Students are doing a great job of asking questions, engaging in discussion, and demonstrating their understanding of the material!
In modern history, students’ first research projects are underway. We have a wide range of projects, and they all seem to be excited to pursue areas of interest within the past 54 years of history. I’m excited to see their final products in a few weeks!
